Yes, I had a fascination with electricity from a very young age.
Having the old TV shop, BEM Electronics, on Ellice ave (then later Exclusive Audio) created the perfect storm to feed what would become my passion for electronics. It was the early '70s, when a customer walked into the shop with a television, in a rather panicked mode. There was a big hockey game that night. All the regular staff were out on the road doing service calls. It was just myself and my mom there. " I need this fixed for the big game tonight!" Being some 50 years ago, who knows, it might have even been the big Russia / Canada hockey game. I took the back off the TV and within a couple moments noticed that there was a wire loose wire off of the main on/off power switch. I was able to get the soldering gun in there with a bit of solder and reattach the wire. Presto, It worked! The customer was absolutely elated. And so was I as he handed me a $5 bill. Back then, you could feed a family of six people at McDonald's with that paltry sum. Saturdays at the shop became a regular thing for me. Driving the guys absolutely crazy with question after question. But I learned a lot from those guys, and I am grateful. |
I would say I became a full-fledged technician in my mid teens. I still didn't have the formal theory training though. That came in high school from grades 10 through 12. I had some amazing teachers; I need to give props to Glen Richardson, he was an amazing teacher.

Eventually I would become quite proficient working on a variety of products. TVs, VCRs, Camcorders, Car Audio, all types of audio gear, Microwave Ovens, Radios, pretty much anything with a cord on it.
In 2006 I applied for a job that required that "piece of paper". I went to MITT in South Winnipeg and had an interview. They gave me 90% course credit, I was able to complete the 10-month course in 3 weeks with a 4.0 final grade. I was told, up until that point, the highest course credit they had ever given, was 75%. It's been an amazing 45+ year run feeding this passion and helping people to enjoy their music and classic audio gear. I have made some amazing friends that share this common love for good sound and good music. Today, my focus is primarily audio equipment from the classic era. Some of the things I DO NOT work on anymore: multi-channel theater receivers, car audio, old mechanical idler Drive turntables, turntables with electronically controlled tonearms, and car audio. I strive for, and maintain, a very high level of customer satisfaction. My return rate on repairs is less than 2%. I take great satisfaction in fixing your item properly the first time and at a very reasonable cost. You're still with me? Thank you for reading this page. You can trust Tweakjunkie to take care of your item properly and efficiently the first time.
